A&E's Award-Winning Series

He is considered to be the most widely read English writer - second only to Shakespeare. However, this legendary writer and wit, once the toast of London, ended his days penniless and alone.

From the constant controversy surrounding his sexuality to his important role in the aesthetic movement to the magnificent works he left behind, Irish-born Oscar Wilde was always a little ahead of his time. His words and behavior brought color to an otherwise grey Victorian England. Unfortunately, not everyone was ready for Wilde, and in 1895, the man whose genius had yet to be solidified in history was imprisoned for gross indecency after is was discovered he was having a homosexual affair.

Using a wealth of archival material, including hundreds of photos and excerpts from Wilde's famous letters, Biography® recalls the life of this charming and eccentric literary giant.
