Plot
Queen Elizabeth I was very particular about portraits of herself and authorized only a few to be painted during her 44-year reign. Whether she would have approved of this A&E Biography is uncertain, but it does show her to be an early master (or should we say mistress?) of spin control. The hour-long program examines how Elizabeth learned to juggle the conflicting roles of monarch and woman to her advantage, remaining unmarried in order to court diplomatic alliances, inspire the loyalty of men such as Sir Walter Raleigh, and promote the public's adoration of the Virgin Queen. While the program may not delve as deeply into the queen's character as do the fictional portrayals Elizabeth and the stunning six-part series Elizabeth R, it does provide clear, concise historical background, making it a solid framework on which to stretch one of these more colorful portraits. --Larisa Lomacky Moore
